Clarence Valley Seniors Computer Club
Club History
In March, 2005 the Rotary Club of Maclean called a meeting of seniors to gauge support for the proposed formation of a Seniors Computer Club. Following presentations by John Wells from Rotary, a steering committee of 26 seniors was established.
With a cash donation of $150 from the Rotary Club of Maclean and a small cash donation from each member of the steering committee the task of formalising the club began.
Australian Seniors Computing Clubs Association (ASCCA) gave valuable advice on the need to apply for Incorporation and to register a name for the club. This action resulted in Clarence Valley Senior’s Computer Club (CVSCC) and incorporation being granted on 2nd June, 2005.
The Rotary Club of Maclean negotiated with Clarence Valley Council for the provision of several computers that were surplus to their requirements and an official handover took place on 8th October, 2005.
Following several failed negotiations finding a suitable location the CVSCC finally obtained the use of the Showground Pavilion, but unfortunately, this site was not conducive to computer usage and a search for a better location ensued.
By chance rooms at the old Council Chambers became available and this was quickly taken up by the club. The club was forced out of those rooms when council gave notice that the building would be demolished to make way for a new modern community centre. In 2023 negotiations continued to find a new club location, when council threw the club a life-line by offering to rent 50A River Street as the new home for the club. The club is fully operational by a team of dedicated volunteers, who give their time freely to teach seniors how to manage and understand digital technology.
From those humble beginnings the Clarence Valley Seniors Computer Club now enjoys modern facilities with the latest computer technology available for its members. The club supports and encourages its members to develop and manage their skills using Computers, Smartphones, Tablets, iPads and even smart televisions. The committee is continuously looking for new and innovative ways to assist and help its members with their Technology inquiries.
